Indian State Elections

It is past midnight here in Fremont and I am unable to get any sleep. My eyes are glued on to the internet eagerly watching the state elections of MP, Rajasthan, Mizoram and Chhattisgarh.

It appears that Congress is set to form Govt in 3 of the 5 states (at this time at least).

Personally I consider myself a fiscal conservative and social liberal. Unfortunately there is no party which comes under this setting, so I consider myself a supporter of NDA. I am proud to say anyday, anywhere that I like BJP and what it stands for. Just to be clear I am a liberal person but I believe that the middle class deserves its due. When I see Congress take our tax money and give it to poor who a) dont use is properly b) who keep asking for more - it makes me mad. Why should we pay taxes and distribute wealth to the poor. Give them education, give them jobs but please don't take our money. It is really upsetting that the entire Indian media is against BJP calling them communal and anti-secular.

I really do not think that is completely true. What they are a party which does not pander to the minority due to vote bank politics.

And having all TV channels brainwash the Indian public time and again with the same message makes a lie sound a lot like truth. It is not like that I hate congress, I like BJP more. There was a time till Rajiv Gandhi - I was an ardent Congress supporter. However I grew up, times changed and my eyes were finally opened. It was really interesting to learn that most of the students in my college were pro-bjp. I guess there are a lot of youth who really like what the BJP does and has to say.

I agree that BJP does like to show as if they have a hindutva agenda. I am not sure how commited they are to it. My question to Indian media is that "Is being a Hindu a crime? Does following a religion make you a non secular person?" I guess by the dubious media standard, if you are pro-minorities and anti-hindu, that makes you secular. Drives you insane, doesn't it?

Getting back to the election, the recent bomb blasts should have sent a warning sign to the Center. We are yet to see any concrete action. And people who blamed the Govt for all the terror issues, some how conveniently forgot the issue and voted for the same party which failed to stop this horrible act of terror. I dont get it. You light candles and cry that Govt did not do anything but still vote for them.

May be I am the one who is stupid or is it just me to believe that the best way to teach congress a lesson is not voting for them? There may be more reasons to why these states went to Congress. I am by no means a politics expert, I am trying to understand the mentality of the voters. Why would they do this? Why is media so pro-congress? Why has BJP become a party for hardliners?

These are questions that will always keep me thinking. The only positive thing I see from this election is that NDA would learn that it has a long way to go to win next year national election. I hope they win, I believe they will keep us safe and secure. Above all middle class deserves a break. Jai Hind.
